디지털 스토리텔링을 통한 여성의 창작 ― 로맨스 웹소설을 중심으로 ―Women’s Creation through Digital Storytelling: Romance Novels on the Web

본 논문에서는 여성이 로맨스 웹소설을 매개로 삼아 대안적인 온라인 공동체를 형성하는 과정을 분석하고, 궁극적으로 허구적 서사체와 여성 온라인 공동체의 상관관계를 연구한다. 가상 세계에서는 여성도 취미 및 취향 등에 따라서 자발적으로 공동체를 형성할 수 있다. 특이할 만한 점은, 한국의 여성 중심의 온라인 공동체의 경우 실제 세계의 연령 및 관심사와는 별개로, 여성 사용자들이 ‘로맨스’라는 허구적 서사체를 공유하는 과정에서 구성원 사이의 신뢰를 구축하게 된다는 것이다. 한국의 경우 2000년대 초반부터 폐쇄적 여성 온라인 공동체를 중심으로 로맨스가 활성화되기 시작했으며, 2013년부터 포털 사이트 및 전문 사이트를 중심으로 대중 문학으로 확장되고 있다. 서사적으로는 설화적 공간을 시공간 배경으로 제시하며 동성애 모티브를 ‘이상적 합일’의 관계로 제시한다는 점에서 특이하다. 디지털 기술이 발달함에 따라서, 수동적인 독서 중심의 북클럽은 서서히 적극적인 창작 중심의 디지털 스토리텔링 클럽으로 확장된다. 가상 세계에서는 전문적인 창작 교육을 받지 않은 여성에게도 개인의 자기 표현과 자기 구성으로서의 글쓰기 기회가 주어진다. 즉 이야기를 반복적으로 소비하는 과정에서 자발적으로 리터러시를 획득하고, 리텔링을 통해서 이야기를 재구성하는 과정을 거쳐 최종적으로 새로운 이야기를 창작하는 작가로 거듭날 수 있다. 이 과정에서 하나의 소설을 다수의 작가들이 집필하는 ‘협업적 소설(collaborative fiction)’이 실험적으로 나타나기도 한다. 이때 온라인 공동체에서 발생한 협업적 소설은 상호개인적(interpersonal) 특성을 지향한다. 디지털 시대의 여성에게 있어서 가상 세계는 자신을 표현할 수 있는 ‘자기만의 사이버 방(A Cyber room of One’s Own)’으로 작용한다. 가상 세계에서 여성은 허구적 소설을 공유하고 텍스트 내적인 가치를 중심으로 구성원 사이의 상호 신뢰 관계를 구축한 뒤, 점차적으로 텍스트 외적인 문제, 즉 여성으로서 직면하고 있는 개인과 사회의 문제에 대해서도 다양한 담론을 형성할 수 있다.
Primary purpose of this paper is to analyze online communities of female users that focus on romance novels published on the web. In the virtual world, women can form various online communities based on their hobbies and tastes. In Korea, female users establish trust relationships with the members of online communities in the process of sharing romance novels. In the early 2000s, romance novels began to become popular among online communities of female users. Since 2013, they have expanded mainly to portal sites . Korean romance novels on the web depict homosexuality as an ideal relationship. As digital technology developed, book clubs have expanded into digital storytelling clubs. In the virtual world, women can also write novels as a means of self-representation and self-construction. Amateurs can become professional writers through the process of reading and creating romance novels. This community also produces collaborative fiction and interpersonal narratives written by many writers. For women in the digital age, the virtual world is a “cyber room of one's own. “In this space, women can share various subjects concerning women and society through fictional romance. As a result, women can form virtual communities and alternative discourses through digital storytelling.
